Originally established in 1999 to facilitate the global recognition of laboratory testing and calibration services, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) Standard ISO 17025 establishes the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This is the principal internationally recognised quality assurance scheme for testing and calibration laboratories worldwide. Which allows a laboratory to be accredited to carry out specific testing or calibration services.

A new edition of the ISO 17025 International Standard was in introduced in November 2017, and all currently accredited laboratories are required to transition to the revised edition by November 2020.
